CUMMINS swimming coaches Kathryn Barry-Secker and Jane Nelligan have been awarded scholarships to keep developing their skills as regional coaches.  Both women were awarded Wendy Ey Memorial Scholarships through the Office for Sport and Recreation.

They have been level one qualified coaches for several years and have developed their skills and volunteered to coach swimmers from the West Coast Swimming Club (WCSC) and the Cummins area.

Both women have worked with swimmers with a disability, developed young swimmers and have worked with the indigenous program.  They also shared a scholarship from Swimming Australia and the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association, with WCSC support.

The women went to a national conference along with head coach Carol Veldhuyzen and learned about high performance coaching, teaching streams and the disability and masters courses. Mrs Veldhuyzen also learnt about coaching open waters swimmers.

"As a club we are extremely lucky to have the level of coaching skills available; most regional communities in SA struggle to find trained and qualified coaches," Mrs Veldhuyzen said. "Jane and Kathryn certainly deserve the scholarships and support, they are dedicated and highly skilled teachers and coaches that have shown a long term  commitment to the club and their local and surrounding communities."

Former Port Lincoln swimmer Rebecca Paterson is also helping develop a program that will bring former club swimmers aged over 18 back into the club for a 12-week program before the 2013 country championships.

Ms Paterson still holds country records in breaststroke that have stood for 20 years.
