Club Captains are chosen at the start of each swimming season. There is a Club Captain Selection Policy that the West Coast Swimming Club follow to establish nominations and final selection. Upon being nominated by the coaches and ratified by the committee, all nominees are then up for selection by the current club swimmers. They are asked to vote on who they think provides all the qualities that a Club Captain epitomises for our club for the upcoming season.
My name is Dana Hurrell and I have been involved with West Coast Swimming Club for around 5 years. I first started swimming as a year 5 student, with the intent of finding and joining a sport that I loved. I soon discovered that our club was seen as much more than a sport to a countless number of our swimmers and began to develop many long-lasting friendships.
As a club, we support and encourage each other, whilst celebrating every achievement that each individual makes, no matter how big or small. Swimming has taught me many life lessons, such as, structure and discipline, that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. I believe every swimmer, new or experienced, has the potential to achieve whatever they set their minds to. I enjoy being an assistant coach for many of our younger swimmers and it is very rewarding to watch them learn and develop in their strokes, racing and confidence. It is truly a privilege to have been chosen as one of the Club Captain’s for our talented and inspiring West Coast Swimming Club.
As a captain, I hope to help create an environment within our club that continues to fire up a spark in each and every swimmer, so that every child can reach their personal goals. I hope to lead by example and be a supportive, encouraging and approachable person to all members of our team. Together, we can continue to strengthen our team, whilst creating tonnes of fun, friendships and skills along the way. GO WEST COAST!!!
I have been swimming with the West Coast Swimming Club based in Port Lincoln since the age of 5 years. My first race was at the Norwood Long Course Carnival when I was 8 years old in 2011. I attended my first Country Championships in the Summer of 2012 racing as a 'Superfish' at Port Pirie. This summer I am looking forward to leading our team and attending my 8th SA Country Swimming Championships. Having now raced in all of the SA Country Championship locations it will be great to return to Port Pirie again. I love my club and have built some fantastic friendships with other club members and their families. Swimming has taught me how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and how to work hard to achieve personal goals. I am dedicated to my training and give my best to each session. I am looking forward to supporting our Junior and Development squads on pool deck. If swimmers have ideas which they believe will build our team spirit I would love to help see these ideas become reality!
